I always think of Labor Day weekend as the last sun-drenched weekend of summer when everyone does the last trip to the lake or the last camping trip or what-have-you. Here is a picture of our Labor Day here in the Bangtail mountains:

That's right - snow. Welcome to Montana. We spent the day popping popcorn, slurping hot chocolate and hanging out by the woodstove watching the snow fall. At least it didn't stick and after awhile it turned into rain. But ever since then, it has been downright chilly, especially at night. We feel the imminence of winter, even though we know that it usually doesn't get serious about snow until after Thanksgiving. Still, we need to get more firewood put up and we need to get that endless water project done before the ground freezes.

About twice a week we force ourselves to leave our little paradise and drive into town (Livingston) to run errands. The picture above and the one following this paragraph show what the road to town looks like this time of year. This is Orea Creek road, which is the county road that leads up to our poorly maintained private road. The county grades the road once a year, so it is not a bad drive. They also plow it in the winter.

One trip we always make when we go to town is to the dump to get rid of garbage. Why am I telling you this fascinating information? Because the green box (aka dumpster) station where we deposit our garbage has an absolutely gorgeous view of the Absarokas down the length of the Paradise Valley. Here is the view from the most scenic dump I've ever seen:

Livingston is a picturesque old-fashioned little town. It has retained its small town charm and friendliness and so far has avoided the chain-store sprawl that has infected Bozeman. Here is a picture looking up Main Street:
Coyotes are howling down in the valley below us tonight. It's time to call it a day.

My first husband was from Livingston and I remember having an ice cream float in the "malt shop" in downtown Livingston. Is it by chance still there? Okay, that was in the 1970's--but still.
